Hi there! Today, I’m sharing a super practical and eco-friendly DIY project—making a door stopper from an unused plastic gallon bottle. Not only does this project help reduce waste, but it’s also a fun way to repurpose everyday items around your home. Let’s get started!
Materials You’ll Need
- An old plastic gallon bottle
- Utility knife or cutter
- Ruler and marker
- Sandpaper or file (optional for smoothing edges)
- Adhesive (double-sided tape or glue)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preparing the Bottle
- Begin by drawing a rectangular shape on the front of the plastic gallon, extending down to the base.
- The dimensions I used were 6.5 cm wide, 12 cm long, and 4 cm high, but you can adjust the size based on your needs.
2. Cutting the Main Piece
- Carefully cut along the marked lines using a utility knife. Be cautious! The thick plastic can be tricky to cut, so go slow and steady.
- After cutting, you’ll have an L-shaped plastic piece.
3. Adding the Inner Bend
- Draw another rectangle in the center of the L-shaped piece, about 5 cm long and 6 cm high.
- Cut along three sides only, leaving the top edge intact. This will allow you to bend the inner piece upward to form a locking mechanism.
- Gently fold the cut section upwards to create the stopper’s catch.
4. Smoothing and Shaping
- Trim the corners of the L-shaped piece to make them rounded.
- Use sandpaper or a file to smooth out sharp edges for a polished look.
5. Creating a Protective Pad
- Cut a small rectangular piece (5 cm x 2 cm) from the leftover plastic.
- This piece will act as a protective pad to prevent the door from scratching.
6. Assembling the Door Stopper
- Attach the smaller piece to the lower right corner of your door using adhesive.
- Position the larger piece on the floor where you want the door to stop, ensuring the inner bent section locks the door in place.
Testing the Door Stopper
Try it out! The door stopper should hold the door securely in place. To release it, simply tap the catch with your foot—it’s easy and hands-free!
Why Make a DIY Door Stopper?
You might wonder why not just buy one since they’re inexpensive. For me, it’s all about sustainability and creativity. Repurposing an unused plastic gallon bottle gives it a second life and keeps it out of the landfill. Plus, making things yourself is incredibly satisfying!
